WHITNEY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY SYSTEM ON A MISSION TO
PROVIDE ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATION IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
The Whitney International
University System (WIUS) is a relatively new player in the
"global" higher education arena, with a mission to provide
increased access to higher education to prospective students
in developing countries. WIUS is targeting students who
historically been unable to afford college tuition, and who
live in areas where higher education is not so readily
available to them. To get a better understanding of how WIUS
operates, Educational Pathways interviewed Douglas L.
Frederick, named WIUS chief executive officer in June 2007.
Frederick has several decades of executive-level experience,
formerly having leadership and strategy-development
responsibilities with such companies as EDS, The Boeing
Company and the Netherlands-based Baan Company. He is also
an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow.

DYKNOW SOFTWARE FACILITATES ACTIVITIES FOR ACTIVE LEARNING
DyKnow is a relatively
young educational software company (launched in 2003) based
out of Indianapolis. Its two products, DyKnow Vision
(collaborative note taking software) and DyKnow Monitor
(computer monitoring and control software), are currently
deployed internationally in a wide variety of K12 and higher
education courses and programs. As noted in a paper by its
inventor, Dave Berque, a professor of computer science at
DePauw University, who is now a member of the company’s
advisory board, "the DyKnow system supports teaching and
learning by facilitating four mutually supportive
activities: collaborative note taking; classroom
interaction; out of class review, replay and grading of
classroom materials; and computer monitoring."

AUSTRALIA'S CARRICK INSTITUTE FOR LEARNING AND TEACHING IN
HIGHER EDUCATION AIMS AT RAISING THE PROFILE OF TEACHING AND
LEARNING AND ENCOURAGING PRODUCTIVE COLLABORATION
Like all higher education
institutions, Australian colleges and universities face
demands in which the development of effective teaching and
learning environments, and the sharing of information and
the facilitation of interaction between colleagues to bring
about effective change and transformation related to
teaching and learning, are of the highest priority. In this
brief report, we present an overview of a relatively new and
interesting Australian higher education organization - The
Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher
Education Ltd. Before starting on The Carrick Institute,
however, we also thought it necessary to provide a fairly
short review on the differences between higher education in
Australia and higher education in the U.S.
