There’s plenty of discussion, research and development and
analysis going on about electronic portfolios (ePortfolios)
these days. A simple Google or ERIC database search will
easily put you in touch with an overwhelming amount of
information about emerging ePortfolio technology and many of
the current uses of ePortfolios.

John Ittelson knows ePortfolios. In addition to being a
facilitator for the Educause-sponsored National Learning
Infrastructure Initiative’s (NLII) Electronic Portfolios
Community of Practice, Ittelson’s research as a NLII Fellow
in 2001 covered the emerging area of students’ electronic
identities and ePortfolios.

Supportive Services Program at University of Minnesota
Duluth (UMD). However, his colleagues at the Open Source
Portfolio Initiative (OSPI), where he is a founding member,
call him the "Portfolio Evangelist."

IUPUI'S "TRANSFORMATIONAL" EPORTFOLIO TECHNOLOGY
At the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
campus, the Epsilen Portfolios Project team - which is being
led by Ali Jafari, director of the IUPUI CyberLab and
professor of computer technology in the School of
Engineering and Technology - launched a beta version of an
ePortfolio system in July 2002. Jafari is also responsible
for initiating and establishing a research and development
project called the ePortConsortium.

UW HOME-GROWS IMPRESSIVE EPORTFOLIO TOOLS
Mark Farrelly, program manager of Educational Partnerships
and Learning Technologies (EP<) at the University of
Washington (UW), explains that "the kernel of the idea" came
in December 2001. It all started when an action-plan group
of university administrators from across campus, including
academic advising and career planning personnel, asked
Farrelly’s department, which is the technology support arm
at UW, if they could build an ePortfolio tool that would
connect all UW students to the truly "holistic" experience
of their higher education.
