COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES TEACHING K-12 TEACHERS ONLINE HOW
TO UTILIZE TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION
Providing teachers with the
means and knowledge to teach online and incorporate
technology inside the K-12 teaching and learning arena is an
obvious growth area for higher education schools and
colleges of education.
Broadly speaking, there are two types of online faculty
training and education related to distance learning and
teaching: One is about training teachers how to use whatever
course management system is in place and whatever plug-in
software might be utilized inside their online classes; the
other is about providing information, instruction and the
opportunity for collaboration among peers through
distance-education-related degree programs, individual
classes and workshops, and specialized certificate and
professional development programs - all available online,
which, in many cases, is the preferred mode of delivery for
busy teachers.
Training teachers how to use software is typically
provided by the software providers themselves. Teaching
teachers about sound pedagogy as it relates to teaching at a
distance, instructional design, and technology-integration
best practices are provided through a number of for-profit
and not-for-profit providers of higher education distance
learning programs.
Both types of online faculty training/education are also
provided at the school, district and state levels, depending
on the sophistication and staff of a school’s, district’s or
state’s information technology department.
